    How we got started

Helping Our Brothers & Sisters (HOBS) originally began as an annual dinner gathering held every November 10 honoring the Marine Corps and those who have served their country. Many who attended these annual gatherings were interested in developing ways to educate the general public about GLBT issues. Also, they wanted to give hope and provide assistance to those individual GLBT community members whose options have been exhausted because of the various circumstances in their lives. HOBS was formed as a 501(c)(3) non-profit to forward these shared goals.

    What we're learning

Good intentions alone are not sufficient to build a robust organization dedicated to provide help to those in need. The key to an effective organization are the talented people who share the desire to help others. Our organization is being built with the support, advice and counsel of people who passionately want to help marginalized GLTB individuals achieve independence and self-sufficiency, and who want to educate the public about the harmful effects of discrimination directed against members of the GLTB community.

    Our aproach to helping

HOBS helps to meet the short term needs of marginalized GLBT in the Washington D.C. area, who don't fit the criteria for help from other organizations or agencies. These people, unfortunately, often fall through the cracks, and they can develop a sense of helplessness. We often try to connect donors to the clients who need to the services of organizations, professionals, and government agencies, which are able to provide a variety of resources and services, such as medical referrals and educational services, among others. This adds a personal dimension for our donors who find satisfaction in knowing that their generosity and efforts to help those in need can make a positive difference in an individual's life and help these individuals achieve independence, self-sufficiency, and restore their sense of hope.

Also, we are currently developing projects and programs to educate the public about the harmful effects of discrimination directed against people because of their sexual orientation. Among the projects we have in development are Book Discussion Groups, Receptions for authors of Books addressing GLTB issues- both fiction and non-fiction, and Speakers Events, featuring prominent members of our community addressing contemporary issues affecting our community.
